Birthing From Within Childbirth Education

There is room for your joy and excitement, right next to the questions and fears you may have about birth. Birth is complex and emotional just like our workshops.

The information and practice you need - without fear or fluff!

We lead Birthing From Within childbirth classes. In this method of childbirth preparation we will center YOU, the birthing family, and guide you to gain just enough medical information along with a deeper level of awareness and connection to yourself, your birth partner/s, and your baby.

This class focuses on birth as a transformative event that can not be planned. We welcome people birthing in all locations, including home, hospital, or free-standing birth centers.

Each step of the way there is time to SLOW DOWN and reflect on exactly what is important to your family! We are excited to have you join us as you explore your own wisdom, compassion, and strength while filling the information gaps so that you feel READY to birth and care for your baby!

If you want to feel ready for birth:

  • Learn all the things about birth you didn’t know you needed to know!
  • Gain an understanding of the stages of labor and early postpartum.
  • Practice comfort measures, labor positions, and partner touch and support.
  • Build mindfulness techniques to cope with discomfort and stress.
  • Understand when interventions can help birth and how stay grounded if birth looks different than you had hoped.
  • Use your worry and fear to help guide your self-advocacy.

What Parents Saying About Birthing From Within:

“Like many parents living in a socially progressive region, of course we had already done a great deal of reading and sought other ways of educating ourselves. This class gave us the opportunity to compare the methods we were already aware of with alternatives, and the methods being considered by our fellow classmates.”

“We had an amazing birth experience, and taking the Birthing From Within class was very valuable! Jason and I were very thankful for all the knowledge and ways of thinking that you helped open our minds to. Honestly, I believe the class helped my husband most of all! within minutes of Malia being born, he said, “I sure am glad we took that class!”

“I am so hugely grateful we were able to meet and that Kerry and I were able to learn so much from you in our weekend immersion. You should know, that class brought us so much closer together as a couple, and we feel truly blessed to have gained so much from it. Thank you again for your wisdom and teachings.”

“She was one of the most attentive teachers, answering every question that came to mind – and having the patience to wait for those questions to arise. She really took the time to get to know us and figure out what kind of experience for which we were hoping. Furthermore, it wasn’t just the physical act of birth – she really helped us focus on our relationship and communication as a couple. It was the perfect balance of the hard (and kind of scary!) realities of birth mixed with the encouragement and support we needed. I think we both left the class feeling better informed and more prepared, but also excited for what was going to happen. We are so grateful.”

Sarah C.

“Thank you so much for being such an inspiring mentor. You have taught me to trust in the natural process of childbirth, and you have instilled a great confidence in myself and my abilities to provide as a partner for my wife.”

“We took the weekend intensive Birthing from Within class with Amity. We got what we expected as far as factual learning, what we weren’t expecting is the emotional learning. During our birth it was the emotional learning we tapped into to get us through the unexpected events. Cannot recommend it enough!”

“The Birthing from Within class taught by Amity was a pleasure to be a part of. My husband and I learned so much in the 3-day weekend course that we will take with us to our birth. Amity was engaging, thoughtful, and so much fun just to watch and listen to! She is a fantastic instructor and it is obvious how gifted she is at being a doula and an instructor. The tools used in the class keep you engaged and focused and the time goes by relatively quickly. We feel lucky to have had Amity as our instructor and it was great meeting the other couples in our class as well.”

“I would recommend this class to any pregnant woman or her partner. It was a truly unique and wonderful way for me to connect to my fears and questions about labor, and the fears of my partner and talk about how to cope with them honestly. We feel so prepared for birth and have learned so much about each other; I can’t imagine how I would feel if we hadn’t had some of the exercises that helped prepare us. Amity really helped each person (not just the mothers!) to look deeper than his/her questions to see what issues were beneath. Our class was the highlight of my week, everyone felt safe enough to contribute, and I will miss it very much in the last few weeks before my baby comes!”

“The class was excellent. I didn’t really know what to expect going into it, but felt it was absolutely worth it by the time we came out of it. Amity is a gracious and compassionate teacher. She is full of wisdom and insight, with an abundance of humility that allows each parent-to-be to explore and share their own innate wisdom.”

“Amity did a great job in preparing us for what to expect (as much as is possible) during labor and especially for the emergency c-section we had to have due to fetal distress. The “bag of tools” we brought into this experience was very valuable for both myself and my partner, and I felt very capable in dealing with my labor as it progressed, encountered some problems, with an eventual transfer to the hospital. Despite these unforeseen circumstances, we felt like we were able to deal with the changing situation because of this class.”

J. & B.

“Our instructor, Amity, brought her years as a birth educator and a as doula to create a fun, engaging, and informative learning environment. She provided my wife and I an opportunity to reexamine and become re-energized about your birthing plan. I especially enjoyed that everyone’s vision for their child’s birth was met with encouragement.”

“The ground below us actually feels a lot more stable as we feel more empowered, knowing that we are doing our best, and that it is enough. Thank you for your time and support.”  M + J, expecting parents

“We talk about what we learned in your class all the time. It’s just such useful life information, not just birthing information. I’m 5 days out from my due date. Feeling great overall and looking forward to meeting the little one.”

Kassandra M.

“This has been a great class. I’ve been extremely impressed with how you’ve been able to cover a lot of territory while staying somewhat unbiased and not presenting everything as though there is a “right” way. Even if the discussion took an opinionated turn, you gracefully and tactfully steered that thought/ issue/ opinion to a less biased place. I felt comfortable asking any and all questions without feeling awkward or judged by you.”

“Amity was a gentle, knowledgeable and caring facilitator. I definitely feel the time in class has opened me to new ways of being at the center of our birth.”

Joshua R

“We had such a sweet evening together after class, reflecting on what was helpful and sharing with each other. We’re so grateful!”

Frequently Asked Questions

I want to have pain meds, can I still take this class?

FOR SURE! You may or may not know if you want to have pain medication as part of your labor. Either way this workshop will help you feel into to what you really want and understand that sometimes the plans change AND you can still have a positive experience.

The coping practices you will can be helpful in pregnancy, labor, and postpartum. There are lots of new emotions and physical sensations to cope with in all variations of labor.

You and your partner will be able to stay more grounded in the unexpected events of labor having practiced coping techniques together.

What is the difference between the one-day and two-day workshops?
The difference between the longer class and shorter class is kind of like going away for a getaway weekend that was 3 days, vs a trip that was just 2 days. You would see fewer sights, and pick up the speed a bit. They both are enjoyable but one is more fulfilling.
There is no single class that can teach someone all they need to know. I'm still learning about birth after 14 years with that as my main focus! Both of the classes will teach participants birthing positions, coping practices, and spend time looking inward to see how they can use their resourcefulness to enhance their experience. The two-day class offers more practice time, a few more coping techniques, and more time for one-on-one partner practice.
For years I would not even offer a one day session because I thought it would't be good enough for families. Well, I started offering it last year and people have LOVED it.
When it comes down to it, your schedule and availability, along with other layers of support you have, and the amount of information gathering you have been doing should help give a picture of if the one or two day session is right for you. You won't need a hospital class in addition to the Birthing From Within sessions. Some people LOVE going to classes and learning all that they can, and even like the time they get to spend together with their partner and so they take all the classes! I think better than taking two birth classes, that you attend the relationship workshop called Bringing Baby Home. There are lots of people who offer that class if you didn't want to put all your eggs into the Thresholds basket. It can be nice to hear and learn from many different perspectives. I think we do a great job, but know that there are others doing great work as well.
When should I take the class?

Birthing From Within classes can be taken any time during your pregnancy. People often take it between 20-37 weeks. The positive parts of taking the class early on is that you have lots of time to put the skills into practice. This includes partner support and involvement, self-advocacy, connecting with your baby, facing fears, and building community.

The downside of taking it early is that the pregnant body will be much smaller than in labor and the comfort measure practice may not be as useful.

Here is a guideline for when to take classes.

Early Pregnancy Class (0-28 weeks)

Birthing From Within (20-35 weeks)

Nourishing Newborns + Get that Baby Out (30-37 weeks)

Bringing Baby Home (20-35weeks, or after your baby is born between 2-7months postpartum).

How are Thresholds childbirth classes different from other community classes?

At Thresholds we approach life transitions like engagement, birth and parenting as a rite of passage, a time to learn about and grow closer to yourself and to your partner. With the use of story telling, process art, and mindfulness we help people access their own strength, wisdom, and creativity.

How do I request a scholarship?

Thresholds does our best to make sure that every family who wishes to take our classes is able. If finances are the only reason you don't sign up please email about scholarship and payment plan options.  > Learn more...

Who will lead my class?

The instructors are listed on all pages. Depending on our on-call doula schedule, client needs, we do not always know who will be teaching what class. If you have specific questions please be in touch.

I'm taking a hospital class - can I take Birthing From Within too?

Yes! Our class has very little crossover to traditional information based classes. Many parents take both types of classes and value the different needs that each workshop is providing.

What will I gain from taking this class?

You and your partner/s will dedicate time and space to create an emotionally and physically supportive practice to use in your labor. This practice will be beneficial before, during, and after childbirth. Taking this childbirth class will allow you to spend more time savoring your experience and less time stressing out about what's to come.

We think that all of our childbirth classes and baby care / parenting workshops are useful for parents. If you want you attend more than one class please take advantage of our Sweet Deals.
