DAVINAH SIMMONS LACTATION EDUCATOR & DOULA
Davinah Simmons (she/her) is a full-spectrum doula and Certified Lactation Educator.
Davinah Simmons (she/her) is a full-spectrum doula and Certified Lactation Educator born and raised in Southern California. Since opening her doula practice full-time in 2017 she has supported 80+ families in the Puget Sound area from prenatal, birth, lactation and postpartum doula support she has had the honor of walking alongside growing families in the tenderest and sometimes most challenging moments. To her, birthwork is sacred activism and she is so grateful to call this her vocation.
When she is not floating around in the realm of birthwork you can find her on a trail, making lots of noise in her kitchen, or making playlists on Spotify (they are still important). Davinah is excited to offer childbirth education as she believes it is the first step in learning self-advocacy, trusting birth + how it unfolds, and building community with others on the journey.
CURIOUS? Here are a few Q & A.
Q. WHEN DID YOU ANSWER YOUR CALLING?
From 2013-2016, I ran away from my call to birth work. I convinced myself I was not ready. In that time, I sat next to midwives on planes, met doulas in West Elm, and cross paths with other birth workers in the most random places. Finally, on the massage table, my massage therapist said she had to drop out of a doula training for scheduling reasons and suggested I take the spot. I finally gave in and here I am.
Q. WHAT DID YOU DO BEFORE YOU WERE A DOULA + EDUCATOR?
Before birth work, I worked in Higher Education for 9 years supporting students in a residential community setting. The work was steeped in crisis intervention, event planning, facility management, and mentoring. It was a very rich and often challenging role that I absolutely loved.
When I knew I was burning out, I jumped into property management and real estate to catch my breathe for less than a (soul-sucking) year. During that time, my Mom died, and everything shifted. Birth work was the only thing that made sense.
Q. WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO OUTSIDE OF WORK?
My kitchen is my favorite room in my home. You can usually find me there, making noise and lots of yummy things. I spend a lot of time catching up with my friends and family and when I’m finally still enough to rest, I love to read. I’m obsessed with drying flowers, making anything herbal, and always have music playing in the background.
