KRISTY VALDÉZ POSTPARTUM DOULA
Certified Gottman Educator, Certified Birth Doula (DONA) & Birthing From Within Mentor
I am a postpartum birth worker driven by the pursuit of community wellbeing. I work with families prenatally to plan for their postpartum experience, support folks directly in their Fourth Trimester and beyond, and am a trained Birth Story Listener. I believe when families thrive, our world does too.
Working in the postpartum space, I have been in the thick of it with new parents as they juggle adapting to new routines, learning and bonding with their newborn, and caring for the essential recovery of their birthing body (all while sleep deprived). The Fourth Trimester is an intense time of transformation and reintegration. While it is possible to weather it alone, we really aren’t designed to do it that way. I am of the belief that planning for the postpartum time and receiving support from others creates a foundation for lifelong health and wellness, physically and emotionally.
Every parent deserves to feel nourished, supported, and resilient. I feel honored to help people find ways to make that vision a reality.
CURIOUS? Here are a few Q & A.
Q. WHEN DID YOU ANSWER YOUR CALLING?
I felt a deep calling to postpartum work when I noticed that the new parents among my friends and family were managing to take care of their babies, but had a striking lack of support for their own rest, recovery, and integration into parenthood. The short- and long-term stress and isolation this caused for families I love compelled me to support them in more involved ways. From there, I followed my heart to dive more deeply into more formalized training on postpartum health and resilience.
Q. WHAT DID YOU DO BEFORE YOU WERE A DOULA AND EDUCATOR?
I’ve spent a decade working in the Medicaid insurance world, where I collaborated directly with medical providers, community organizations, and government agencies on access to quality healthcare. Throughout that time, I found ways to creatively pursue my calling in the birth world, including working on holistic maternity reimbursement for care providers, and advocating for equitable and accessible doula coverage and reimbursement.
Q. WHAT IS THE MOST INTERESTING THING YOU HAVE DONE IN YOUR CAREER?
Outside of my insurance work, for eight years I also facilitated a sexuality education curriculum, Our Whole Lives, with middle- and high schoolers. This curriculum has a strong focus on learning and trusting one’s body and self, and emphasizes consent, healthy relationships, social justice, and respect for the nuance of sexual identity, expression, and activity. Year after year, I was inspired by the thoughtfulness and inclusivity of the teens I worked with. Our future generation is bright!
